Last year I voiced my frustrations about how Christmas was being too commercialized. I’m not going to re-post the entire blog from last year. I would suggest that you take a few moments and read my blog post titled, “The Commercialization of Christmas” before you continue reading. (Go ahead… I’ll wait!)

Welcome back!

As you could see my frustrations were with how society has let corporations dictate when business will be open around the holidays. If people didn’t shop on holidays, there would be no need to be open.

[NOTE]  Last year when I wrote that blog post, I was complaining that businesses were opening at “12am, 3am, 4am and 5am” on Black Friday. Now if you noticed, it has become worse. Toys R Us and Wal-Mart started their Black Friday shopping on THURSDAY night (9 & 10pm)… Thanksgiving night! Target and a lot of other companies shifted to 12am… at least they waited until FRIDAY to hold their Black Friday sales.

Anyways…

I just wanted to take this time to remind people that they should NOT shop anywhere on Christmas Day. Be prepared! Staying away from the stores on Christmas will encourage them to stay closed because they are not making enough money to cover operating expenses.

The people who are working on Christmas day so you can buy that forgotten can of whipping cream are missing  out on time spent with their families just so your family can eat dessert. Nothing seems sacred anymore…

Here is what I have in store this Christmas: In order for my wife to spend time with her family, she is working 4am-8am on Christmas day. Then she comes home in time to watch presents being opened. THEN we leave at 11am to drive an hour to Woodburn for family dinner. THEN we leave Woodburn at 3pm to drive an hour back to Gresham so she can finish her day’s worth of work from 4pm-6pm…
ALL of this, just so she can enjoy Christmas Day with her family.

Thanks again for listening to my rant… as you can see, this is a frustrating time of year. Even though I’ve been a couple of years removed from working in retail, I still feel the effects. I just want people to be mindful of the ramifications if they decide to do a little shopping on Christmas Day.
