So another Facebook change…

I remember a few years ago America (along with myself) was singing in unison,

“Change We Can Believe in”

Change is good! It’s how we grow as a society. Evaluate what is going wrong and change it! I have a couple of thoughts about the recent (and in some people’s opinion), most drastic changes to Facebook in recent memory.

If the changes to Facebook were subtle and spread out over time, fewer people would care so adamantly. Google image search old screen shots of Facebook. Take a look at what Facebook was a couple years back. Here, I did it for you:

You would probably respond with something like,

“Oh yeah! I remember that!”

That’s a huge jump to today’s Facebook. One of the reasons people didn’t create a huge uproar over the previous changes is because a lot of them were aesthetic and not the additional and deletion of features. They were also little tweaks added over a period of time. It appears that the recent changes is just another evolution of Facebook that may have happened too quickly. It could be attributed to competitive pressure from Google Plus. In my opinion, Google Plus isn’t better than Facebook and doesn’t pose a threat, but Facebook sure is making it appear so.

My first reaction to the change was, “WTF! Who moved my cheese?!?” I stepped away from the Facebook and went to the gym and began to think about, “why does such a silly website have me and so many other people upset?” For the majority of people that I follow on Twitter and Facebook, the census was that this recent change in Facebook WASN’T something they could believe in.

I think the main reason for everyone being upset is the addition of the “Top Stories” feature in the “Most Recent” stream. I kept my stream at “Most Recent” because I wanted to stay up to date on what is new, not revisiting posts from yesterday. If I was interested in the post, I would have commented on it and stayed in the loop with reply notifications. I don’t like how Facebook determines for me what they think is important and shoves it down my throat. I also didn’t care for the chat sidebar and it’s default mix of online and offline people. Now cut that massive list in half and add a live feed of updates… no thank you!

Maybe this is the last of the major changes for Facebook. Perhaps they feel that they must get all of their ideas and plans released so in the event that Google may steal an idea, they already have released it. This way when they roll out their next update, it doesn’t look like a response to Google Plus and more of an innovation. Much like they have been known to do.

Get to know these changes to Facebook and embrace them. I’ve come to the realization that this is the way it’s going to be, live with it! It may sound complacent, but remember Facebook owns Facebook. They can add and delete features at will. If you want to be a part of something that you can control completely, own a website and start blogging. Being that Facebook owns Facebook, the only one who can defeat Facebook, is Facebook itself!
