It has been said many times that online space is a lot like real estate.
Some people rent, some own, even some places get foreclosed on.
When people and a growing number of businesses decide that they want to explore sharing their message online, the first place they traditionally turn to is social media. Social Media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. is a form of renting online space. It has a low barrier to entry. Although because it’s owned by someone else, you have to agree to their terms and service and if you violate the rules, you might get evicted (account deletion).
Ideally people should want to own their own home. The only way to own your own piece of the Internet is to build and maintain your own website. The question was raised to me the other day, “What about domain registration and web hosting?” I liken at those fees to the equivalent of property taxes on a home. It’s just a cost of owning your own home.
The moral of the story is that if you want to create random thoughts like this one that’ll live on forever in a space you control, set yourself up a website! Enjoy your right to freedom of speech. That is unless you have to watch what you say, then it’s like living with a Home Owners Association…
